The Bitcointalk forum is currently offline, and the reason has been posted on its official Twitter account.
@bitcointalk tweeted that the website – the world’s largest Bitcoin forum – is experiencing a denial of service attack.
There is a DoS attack.

A number of people responded to the tweet, including one Brandon Holder, who suggested the forum use its fund of donated bitcoins to protect the website against DoS attacks:

Another person joked about the fact that the forum blocks users from uploading avatars due to security concerns:

The downtime tracking service Is It Down Right Now reports that bitcointalk.org went offline at some point between 18:38-20:38 (UTC/GMT -7).
It is unknown who is behind the attacks, or when they will end. Also, it is unclear what the forum is doing to mitigate the attack at this point.
This is not the first time that the forum has experienced downtime. The forum has also fallen victim to a number of DDoS attacks, hacks, and other unexpected events in the past. Two months ago, the servers hosting Bitcointalk experienced a disk failure, making it impossible to access in the meantime.
